"Hatikvah" (The Hope), is the national anthem of Israel. Its lyrics are adapted from a poem written by Naphtali Herz Imber, a secular Jew from the city of Złoczów, province of Galicia, who moved to the Land of Israel in the early 1880s. The anthem's theme reflects the nearly 2000-year-old hope of the Jewish people to return to the Land of Israel - their ancient homeland - and to restore it and reclaim it as a sovereign nation.

"As long as in the heart, within,
A Jewish soul still yearns,
And towards the borders of the East
An eye still watches toward Zion,

Our hope is not yet lost,
The hope of two thousand years,
To be a free people in our home land
The land of Zion and Jerusalem"
